CRY screen young hearts at WPA

22 March 2025

On Saturday 22nd March, heart health charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) conducted a heart screening event for 14-35 year olds at WPA's Head Office.

The screening was carried out in memory of Freya Davidson, who passed away from a cardiac arrest with no known history of heart problems, at just 18 years of age. Her family set up a memorial fund, and with the support of family and friends, as well as the WPA Foundation and WPA staff, CRY volunteers were able to come to Taunton and continue their hard work and research among young hearts.

The screening process included an electrocardiogram (ECG) from a qualified cardiac physiologist, which examines the electrical activity of the heart, in addition to a physical examination. ECG results were then reviewed by a doctor, in conjunction with a personal and family history questionnaire. In some cases, individuals received echocardiograms (ultrasound scans of the heart observing size, structure and blood flow) if their ECG needed further investigation.

Neil Davidson, Chief People Officer at WPA, shared: "As a family we were overwhelmed by grief, but we are so grateful for the support that has made this CRY screening possible. CRY exists to stop families from suffering the loss we have endured, and we are deeply moved that Freya's legacy is making a difference. We are especially thankful to our local community, family, friends, and WPA colleagues for their unwavering support." Neil continued, "While she may not be able to physically help others, Freya's medical research aspirations will live on in the work of CRY."
