mycancerdrugs Policy Summary
Policy Document

Important Information

Mycancerdrugs is designed to provide funding towards expensive cancer drugs that are not available to you on the NHS. It is not a comprehensive private medical insurance policy. The maximum age to join this policy is 65. To join, you must be resident in the UK for at least 6 months a year.

Limits on the policy

You will not be eligible for cover if:

  • You have had, or currently have, cancer;
  • You are on a medically supervised health screening or review programme because you are considered to be at higher risk of developing cancer;
  • Either of your parents, brothers or sisters have developed or died from cancer under the age of 60.

To prevent customers joining with the knowledge that they may have cancer there is a 90 day deferment period.

Therefore we will not fund drugs to treat cancers that are diagnosed (or for which symptoms or signs develop) before or within the first 90 days of the policy starting. For example if, within the first month of cover, a policyholder finds a lump or has symptoms such as pain in the abdomen that is subsequently diagnosed as cancerous, the funding of drugs to treat this (or histologically related) cancer(s) would not be covered.

All cover will cease on the date of renewal following your 65th birthday.

Mycancerdrugs is suitable for residents of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. However, because of slight differences in the Scottish NHS system (and increased access to drugs on the NHS in Scotland) Mycancerdrugs may pay out for such drugs on fewer occasions for Scottish patients.

Mycancerdrugs is a policy that provides each person on cover with up to £50,000 worth of benefit towards the cost of providing you with cancer drugs not available from the NHS. The drugs must be prescribed by a UK consultant in charge of your cancer treatment and given with curative intent. This £50,000 benefit limit is applied across the lifetime of each person whilst they are insured by this policy.

The policy will fund cancer drugs that have been licensed and approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) to treat the specific stage and type of cancer (ie the therapeutic indications) the drugs are authorised for. The drugs that WPA approve are available here.

To view the product information and therapeutic indications for a cancer drug visit www.emea.europa.eu/htms/human/epar/a.htm. Examples of such therapies are Avastin®, Sutent® and Tarceva®.

Where a NHS hospital declines to administer the drug, WPA will fund all the costs directly associated with the administration of the drug in the private sector within the benefit limit of £50,000.
